As we ready for 2020, we’re taking a moment to remember the year that was. This is the first of three posts highlighting some of the top stories of 2019. In this group, we focus on stories about our people, corporate culture and some of the ways in which our team works to make the world a better place.
Viasat and Telebras connect first responders in Brazil dam collapse
Viasat and its Brazilian partners acted fast to help when a mining dam collapsed in southern Brazil Jan. 25. The collapse triggered a catastrophic mudslide, killing at least 121 people near the town of Brumadinho and knocking out terrestrial internet in the area.
Viasat and Telebras, Viasat’s partner in Brazil, worked together to provide emergency communications support. The two companies are partnering to bring satellite internet to unconnected areas of the country, using a Brazilian satellite with Viasat’s ground network and infrastructure.
Viasat receives high marks as an accessible workplace
The Disability Equality Index (DEI), a joint initiative by the American Association of People with Disabilities and Disability:IN, recognized Viasat as one of the “Best Places to Work for Disability Inclusion.”
Viasat joins the ranks of Accenture, United Airlines, American Airlines and other companies that have been named a “Best Place to Work” in the past.
It’s an initiative the company has championed through their formal Diversity & Inclusion initiatives and with the creation of Viasat’s Ability Alliance, which provides the company a resource to support employees with disabilities.
Viasat included on Fortune’s ‘Change the World’ list
Viasat was recognized for making a positive social impactful through activities that are part of its core business on this year’s Fortune Change the World list. Viasat debuted on the list in the #12 spot; joining 51 other companies from across the globe on the list.
One major area where Viasat is helping “change the world” is with our Community Wi-Fi service, now available in both Mexico and Brazil and planned for other countries globally. In unserved and underserved communities where internet service is spotty or nonexistent, Viasat Community Wi-Fi offers affordable, high-quality internet access.
Viasat named top San Diego employer brand
Viasat Inc., was named a 2019 Top San Diego Employer Brand by local tech talent in Hired’s 3rd annual Brand Health Report. Hired surveyed tech talent based in the San Diego region, and asked them to rank the most appealing companies to work for in the local area; Viasat was ranked number three.
Hired’s Brand Health report provides data-driven insights for employers to measure the health of their brand and shares a comprehensive overview of how organizations can compete for tech talent’s attention — whether it be compensation, remote work options, workplace culture or career development opportunities.
Viasat Named Global Satellite Business of the Year at 2019 Conference
Viasat Inc. has been awarded the Global Satellite Business of the Year award at Euroconsult’s 16th Annual Awards for Excellence in Satellite Communications.
The Global Satellite Business of the Year award recognizes the operator who achieved the best performance in terms of strategic initiatives but also revenue growth, margins and commercial development during the past year. The award was based on a performance analysis of market players and assessed by senior experts from the Euroconsult team.
Euroconsult announced award winners during the World Satellite Business Week 2019 conference.
Glassdoor ranks Viasat among Best Places to Work in 2020
In December, Viasat was named to Glassdoor’s 2020 Best Places to Work in the U.S. for large employers. Viasat earned a Glassdoor Employees’ Choice Award, landing at No. 27 out of 100 companies recognized.
It was the first year Viasat made the top 100 list.
Based on nearly 700 reviews, Viasat rates 4.4 on a 5-point scale; the average overall rating for Glassdoor companies is 3.5. Glassdoor considers employees who rate their companies between 4 and 5 to be “very satisfied.”
